This blog is for our students and anyone else interested in keeping their family safe.
Articles which are not written by the instructors are posted here for the purpose of discussion and MAY NOT be in agreement with what we teach.
Our mission is to reduce violent crime by teaching how to be more Aware, Avoid trouble and, as a last resort, take Action by being able to defend yourself and your families.
I teach Hand, Stick, Knife and Gun combatives & martial arts as a self-defense tool to be used in real world situations. We start with learning how to avoid trouble in the first place. This is followed by defense against empty hand, stick, knife and gun. In the process my students learn how to defend against each set of weapons using the other weapons as defensive tools; hand against knife or knife against stick for example.
When building a house, it is best to build it upon a strong foundation. Therefore, I start my students with a more modern foundation in Close Quarter Combatives. I add lessons from the traditional Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) as this art transfers over to the modern self-defense (SD)/close quarter combatives (CQC) application very readily. The traditional arts used are for the over all rounding out of the SD/CQC applications when and where they fit well upon the modern foundation. In this way, my students become complete self-defense experts rather than McDojo Artsits that simply collect belts that have no meaning or that cannot be applied.
I also teach Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) in a practical application of combatives, focusing on the direct relation of the empty hand, stick and knife to the streets. This way students can choose what they want to learn: a martial system which serves a greater purpose with self defense or SD/CQC for the essence of Self-Protection. Both serve as a way to stay in shape, increase focus and relieve stress as well as being extremely effective as self-defense training.
A student who wishes to learn how to defend against violence must be prepared for the long hall. Learning to defend against actual physical violence takes time, patience, practice and effort.
Self-defense tactics and strategies need to have hand-to-hand, stick, knife and gun training in all ranges: standing, kneeling and on the ground.
The foundation of my training is in Filipino Martial Arts, Cannibal Combat with Micheal Ritz & The Scientific Fighting Congress' Combatives courses in Hand, Stick, Knife and Gun (http://www.hockscqc.com/). I have also had training in other traditional arts (please see profile).
I am a firm believer that the lessons learned by studying the traditional and modern arts provide an indispensable foundation in philosophy, principle and application of technique.
My philosophy
"Bridging the Gap Between the Military, the Police, The Martial Artist and the Aware Citizenry."
I believe in personal responsibility, integrity and honesty.
I tell my students that I do not want them to fight, but it’s a good idea to know how if they can’t avoid it. As a result, my teachings are focused on helping my students stay out of trouble in the first place. The fight you can always win is the fight you never got in.
I begin by focusing on the three A's: · Awareness · Attitude · Avoid trouble
I teach physical self-defense for the purpose of giving my students the tools needed to defend themselves, but as a last resort only. We must remember that we are the good guys and we must act like it.
